Violet Nelson Memorial Scoreboard

Violet Nelson was a long-time supporter of MTYAA Baseball – and baseball in general. Her husband Gary, coached for many within MTYAA Baseball, teaching the fine art of baseball – and showing ballplayers of all skill levels how to get the most out of their abilities.  Violet and Gary’s son Michael is now a catcher on the Mountlake Terrace Varsity baseball team.

After a long battle with cancer, Violet passed away last year. While she was battling cancer, and even though she was weak from her various treatments, she convinced the doctors to allow her to leave the hospital long enough to attend high school games to watch her son Michael and longtime friends & teammates play ball. She could be seen bundled up at games, usually with an oxygen bottle nearby. As soon as the game was over, she’d head back to the hospital.

Before she passed away, Violet requested that instead of flowers for her memorial service, the money should instead be donated to MTYAA Baseball. At the MTYAA Baseball board meetings, it was discussed what should be done with the donations. It was decided that the most fitting use of the funds would be a long-lasting memorial to Violet Nelson – and thus the Violet Nelson Memorial Scoreboard project was initiated. We thank the many family and friends of the Nelson family for the donations that allowed this project to go forward.
