Umpires Info
Training sessions
Sunday, March 6th, 1:30pm to 4pm. We will start at the MLT Library for
classroom work and move over to E1/E3 for field work. All 1st and 2nd year
umpire candidates are required to attend this session. 3rd year and beyond
(veterans) shall not attend this session.
Sunday March 13th, 1:30pm to 4:00pm. Again, starting at the MLT Library
and ending at E1/E3.
Sat/Sun, March 26th/27. Mustang and Bronco Jamborees. All first, second,
and third year umpires are required to attend and work at least two games
on these days. I will create this schedule after the second training
session.
- Unless you make other arrangements with with me, if you don't attend the
training session(s), you will not be scheduled for any games in 2011.
- After the second training session, I will make selections of umpires for
2011 and will begin the process of creating game schedules, via email.
Experienced/Veteran umpires will have first priority, and 1st year umpires
will essentially get whatever is left over.
- Rookies/1st Year umpires: Be advised that: Not all of you will be
selected to umpire this season. Reason being that there are only so many
games to go around. I have 13 "rookie" umpires this season and that is
twice as many as will be needed. Unfortunately, I cannot accomdate
everybody. I will be making selections, which will largely be based upon
your performance at training sessions and your apparent apptitude for
umpiring.
- Note that unless you can commit to at least ten games during the season,
you will not be able to umpire. Anything less does not develop and improve
your skills and knowledge.
- 1st and 2nd year umpires will only be scheduled for Mustang games. Don't
ask to do Bronco games. 3rd year and veteran umpires will do the Bronco
games and fill in at Mustang occassionally.
FORMS
- All umpires must complete and submit the
W9 form. Fill this out
completely and make sure I can read it.
- All umpires 17 years old or younger must submit the
Medical
Release/Liability Waiver form. This needs to be signed/dated by your
parent/guardian.
- All umpires 18 years old or older must submit the
Background
Check form.
- If you do not submit the above forms which apply to you, with
legible/accurate/correct information, you will not be selected to umpire.
And, I'm not going to chase these things down. This is your
responsibility.
LASTLY
Stay tuned for additional emails to come. If you have any questions,
comments, etc., feel free to shoot me an email and I will get back to you
ASAP.
Regards, KD.

General Information
Umpire gear/equipment:
- Each field has an equipment shed.
In each shed is at least one set of umpire gear, in a blue duffle bag.
- This gear is for your use.
Everything you need is provided (mask, chest, shins, ball bag, indicator, &
brush).
- Make sure that you put everything
back at the conclusion of your game, zip the bag up, and hang it on the wall
or place it on the shelf.
- At E3 & Cypress there are two sets
of gear, one is regular size the other is adult size.
- If something is missing from the
equipment bag, contact me immediately.
- If you arrive at your game and
find the gear has not been returned to the bag, the bag zipped up and stored
away, let me know. The umpires who worked the prior game will be held
accountable. 1st time gear is not taken care of results in a warning. 2nd
times results in not being paid for the game.
Timesheets:
- A generic timesheet will
be provided to record games umpired.
- You can use the same timesheet for
Mustang and Bronco games. Just make sure you use the correct section for the
game.
- I am very aware of "no shows", "tardies",
etc., as the coaches will call me and let me know.
- If you don't show up, you will
lose all remaining games for the season.
- If you are late, your pay will be
reduced.
- I don't expect any problems in
these regards, just wanting to let you know the policy.
- At the end of each month, submit
the timesheet to me by email. I will process, forward to the treasurer, and
your check will be mailed.
Communication:
Kelly Dougan's cell number is 206 941 2220. If
you have a question, problem, need to report an equipment issue, can't make
a game, etc., feel free to call me or text me. - Text works best for simple
things.
- If you need a substitute, you must
give me at least 24 hours notice, if possible ( I understand that
occassionally emergencies occur and 24 hours notice is not possible).
- I suggest that each of you forward
me your cell phone number, to make sure I have the best # to reach you. If
you don't have a cell phone, send me your home number and/or your parents
cell number.
Rainouts/Cancellations:
- Be aware that rain is a tricky
thing. It is really not about the rain or lack of rain, but about the
condition of the field. Often times it will be raining, but the field is in
good condition, and the game will be a go. Other times, it will not be
raining, but the field is not playable due to rain the prior night or during
the day.
- Games at E3 are dictated by the
City of MLT. The rainout line phone # is: 425 776 9173 ext. 4 - call after
4pm.
- Games at Brier, Cypress, and FC,
are a little less structured. Basically, the coaches determine whether the
game will begin or not, based on the fields condition. - The divisions
directors are very good about getting me notice of rainouts, so as soon as I
hear something I will let you know. If you don't get notice that a game is
cancelled or rained out, then assume the game will proceed as scheduled.
Uniforms:
- Make sure you are properly
clothed: Grey slack, black belt, black shoes, blue umpire shirt, and hat.
Your shin guards and chest protector must be inside of your clothing.
- It will be cold for the first
month or so, so where light gloves, long underwear, underarmour, and a black
or blue jacket, to keep yourself warm and dry.
Rules:
Take the time to review the
reference material below as well as the handouts you received at training.
Review the rules, mechanics, etc. Baseball has many many rules, so frequent
review is important.
I appreciate everything you umpires
do for MTYAA baseball. I am very excited for the season to begin and I hope
all of you are as well.
Umpires are not perfect. You are
human and you will make mistakes, you will blow calls, you will get heckled
by the parents and you will be confronted by the coaches. Don't let this
stuff bother you. Do not let parents or coaches influence your calls and
decisions. Please report to me any coaches or parents who you believe have
overstepped the line, so that these problems can be addressed by the
Division Director.
MTYAA Baseball has very high
expectations for our umpires. Please do you best to represent MTYAA Baseball
in a positive and professional manner.
