IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT FOR COACHES

Lystedt Law

In May 2009, a new aw regarding the management of concussions and head injuries became effective.  The Lystedt law, (RCW 4.24.660 and in RCW28A.600) requires that all applicable facility users submit, annually, a signed compliance statement verifying that each user has complied with the law’s requirements. This is a requirement for all MTYAA  coaches that make use of Edmonds School District Fields - for games or practices. It is also important that all MTYAA coaches are aware of the symptoms of head injuries/concussions.

Coaches need to follow these guidelines regarding head injuries:

  • Shall be educated as to the nature and risk of concussion and head injuries including continuing to play after concussion or head injury.  This education shall include signs and symptoms of concussion/brain injury.   Coaches shall educate their athletes on the signs and symptoms of concussion and encourage athletes to notify a coach if they or a teammate exhibits those signs or symptoms.
  • Shall immediately remove from participation/competition any athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury.
  • Shall not allow an athlete who has been removed from play because of a suspected concussion/brain injury to return to play until the athlete has received written clearance from a licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of brain injuries.

Coaches should view the video via the link below, and be familiar with the information in the coaches information packet link below:

Coaches must confirm that they have viewed the video on head injuries and the additional information in the Coaches information Packet. Click here to go to the confirmation page.

Guidelines for Games:

Coaches - please follow these guidelines:

Warming Up:  Make sure to keep players OFF of the foul lines when warming up. After a couple of weeks standing in the same spot playing catch, the grass will be worn-away.  Have the players stand off of the line.

On-Deck batters should run behind the plate.  When the on-deck batter is switching sides of the playing field to warm-up in the "safe-spot" (away from foul balls), make sure to have your players run BEHIND home plate instead of cutting across the playing field...where the ball is (usually) still live. It's possible that the on-deck batter could get involved with a play on the field.

General Information - Field Maintenance

Bronco and Pony teams playing at Cypress

(Teams playing at the Evergreen E3, E4, E5 and Ballinger fields don't need to prep the fields - this is done by Mountlake Terrace Parks employees.)

Practices Field Prep:

Arrive early enough to retrieve bases and rakes from the storage shed. Set bases, rake field as needed to make sure low areas are filled in, rocks, sticks and debris are removed. In some instances, the field may need to be dragged with the ATV and metal mesh drag.

Games: Home team needs to prep the field. Arrive early enough to allow for complete field prep prior to the game. It works best to have parent volunteers prep the field while coaches warm up the players.

Game Day Field Prep:

1. Drag the field to create a uniform play field. Drag the field using the metal mesh drag. Following  rain, or if the field is in bad shape, the spiked drag can be used - followed by the mesh drag. Rake the mound and around home plate as needed to fill in low spots. Note: It is best to start dragging from the center of the field - with a very tight circle around the pitcher's rubber, overlapping previous passes slightly. This will allow covering of tire tracks with the drag, creating a smooth surface.

2. Set bases on anchors.

3. Chalk batter's box - best to use the template to get the right size and position.

4. Chalk the foul lines - works best with two people. Use a string stretched from the back point of home plate down the lines toward 1st and 3rd base so that the string touches the outside edge of each base. Once the line is in position, remove the base so that the chalker can run a line of chalk down the line without the base getting in the way.

5. Chalk an area for each batter's on deck circle -  out of way of foul balls.

6. Chalk an area for the coaches box near first and third bases.
